Mandalay lived up to my expectations after hearing about it's James Beard award. The food, specifically the Nan Gyi Dok. The service was efficient, friendly, and fun. The dish was presented beautifully and mixed table side. For the amount and caliber of food the prices aren't bad either. The interior isn't fancy, but it is the perfect vibe for the restaurant. Highly recommend!
I came to Mandalay on a Wednesday night with a group of people, and it was still very packed. We were able to get seated immediately. The restaurant itself is decorated very nicely! We ordered a lot of things to share. For appetizers we got the tea leaf salad (made vegetarian), satay chicken and Balada. Would definitely recommend the Balada and tea leaf salad as they were super tasty! It was nice that they could accommodate and make the tea leaf salad vegetarian so it didn't have shrimp paste in it. The satay chicken was good too, but expensive for the quantity given. For mains we ordered the Mandalay eggplant, Mandalay Chicken, and Singapore noodles I really enjoyed the eggplant, as it had good flavors. The chicken was similar to orange chicken in flavor, and was also very yummy. I was not a fan of the Singapore noodles as they were too dry for my liking. We also did order the Singapore style noodles to only have chicken, so it was nice that they were also able to accommodate that. Overall, great place for Burmese food in SF!
Great for groups. Service was good and food was delicious. Made a reservation for 6 and was seated on time.
great vibes, attentive service, unique food! honestly feel like mandalay is a special experience, even with all the other burmese spots nearby. it's always a great time with a group or for a date night! their tea leaf salad is my fave in the city!
Mandalay has been a longtime favorite and it's taken me this long to try it. Located in the inner Richmond on California, it feels a bit out of nowhere but it's worth the trek for legit Burmese Cuisine. As soon as you enter, it covered with cultural decor making the ambiance warm and inviting. The servers are attentive and serve many of the items table side like tea leaf salad, noodle soups, etc. Highly recommend as one of the top Burmese restaurants in the city! Recommend: - Tea Leaf Salad - Mandalay Special Noodle - Burmese Jumbo Chili Prawn - Ong No Kaw Soi (chicken noodle soup) - Mandalay naked eggplant - Burmese curry beef - Burmese iced tea (similar to Thai iced tea but less sweet)
This is my go to restaurant whenever someone wants to try something new, check out the inner Richmond or just visiting from out of town. I have been here multiple times throughout the last year and the food quality and service remain reliable and consistent. This most recent visit we showed up around 7:30pm in a Sunday for dinner and were seated immediately. We started with the meat potstickers which were really flavorful. We, of course, had to get the tea leaf salad which was definitely a favorite of the table and the spicy basil chicken. I highly recommend a side of coconut rice. I'm sure I'll be back sometime soon!
Such good Burmese food! We got the balada, tea leaf salad, and the special noodle. The tea leaf salad was so good - I've had it with more greens inside, but liked that this one is focused primarily on the tea leaf. The special noodle was excellent also - the curry sauce and the onions were my favorite part. Service was phenomenal as well! And they have a ton of outdoor seating, which is great for a sunny day
Wow, I've only had Burmese food a few times in my life but after my meal here, I was seriously debating whether Burmese food had become my favorite cuisine. For those who have never had Burmese food, it's sort of like a blend between Thai, Indian, and Chinese cuisine and is so herbaceous and nutty. We got the Tea Leaf Salad, Chicken Coconut Noodles, and Mandalay Chicken and everything was amazing, really a 10/10. Portions were a bit small, but it was too good, I don't even mind. The noodles were deceiving, as they look a bit bland at first (i.e. the sauce is not very colorful) but wow, do they have such a complex and rich flavor due to the coconut notes. Such a pleasant surprise!
Finally got a chance to try this place, it's been on my list for so long. I love Burmese food and I've tried most of the other Burmese spots in the city except for this one. First of all the service was great we had multiple people consistently checking in on us so many times. We ordered the tea leaf salad, the Plata and dip the special lamb and shrimp dish, the chicken, curry, and the garlic noodles. I thought all the food was pretty good, but nothing really wowed me. I was hoping for something spicy and a bit bit more flavorful. I really enjoyed the the fiery lamb dish from Burma Superstar, so I was hoping to get something similar here, but perhaps I just didn't order the right dishes. I found the noodles to be lacking in flavor. I like the tea leaf salad at Burma superstar a lot better. My favorite thing here was probably the lamb chop. I really liked how it was marinated and the spice was on point. I definitely had higher expectations for this place and was a bit disappointed, but maybe I'll go back and try some other things.
